How to Use Watercolour In Your Layouts-The Splatter Technique.

If you’re looking for a super speedy ‘Mixed Media’ layout that will make you look like you’ve been doing this for years, then I reckon this could be the technique for you. And, if I had to give it a skill level, I’d probably go for ‘toddler’-perfect for the beginner! (And if you’re wondering what the heck mixed media is, check out my introduction post here)

And for once, my ’not-so-technical term’ for this method is the ACTUAL term for it!! Wait for it...SPLATTERING! Yep, it is what it says on the tin! To create a super effect, just follow these basic steps

  1. Mix your chosen watercolour paint colour or colours with water (you’ll want it pretty watery!)

  2. Load your brush with the runny paint.

  3. Splatter the paint on your paper.

And that’s pretty much it! There are a few different ways you can splatter the paint. You could simply shake your brush over the paper to ‘rain’ the paint droplets down onto it. Another way is to run a finger along the bristles of your brush which gives more of a ‘spraypaint’ effect. I actually used the ‘2-brush method’ ( I know, fancy right?). Here, you basically just tap your loaded brush onto the handle of another brush to deposit little splatters of paint. I found this gave me a bit more control over where it landed on my page. As it was a sunny day, I sat my page out in the sun for about 2 minutes and it was dry! I could get on with my layout straight away! I was so pleased with how it turned out and I’ll definitely be using this technique again in future projects.

A word of warning though if you’re going to give this technique a go...take a look in the mirror before leaving the house! Unless of course, the ‘splatter‘ make-up is the look you’re going for!
